Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia CareTM and Senior Living Residences (SLR) Announce Plan for Major Milestones, Driving National Expansion

Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™ and Senior Living Residences (SLR) today announced a series of major milestones that underscore a deepening partnership and a shared commitment to advancing dementia care across the country.

Senior Living Residences (SLR), a recognized leader in senior living, has committed to reaccrediting all 17 of its current communities through the Purple Flag program. This includes not only communities with memory care neighborhoods, but also three traditional independent and assisted living communities, signaling a broader industry shift toward integrating dementia care best practices across the full continuum of care.

This commitment builds on SLR’s distinction as the first senior living organization to achieve system-wide Purple Flag accreditation, setting a national benchmark for consistency, quality and accountability in dementia care.

“SLR has consistently demonstrated what leadership looks like in this space,” said Christopher Carter, Founder & CEO of Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™ and President of the Connecticut Assisted Living Association. “Their commitment to reaccredit every community, including traditional settings, reflects a forward-thinking approach that recognizes dementia care as a responsibility shared across all levels of senior living.”

In addition to reaccrediting its existing portfolio, SLR is expanding its footprint with plans to accredit their newly acquired communities. These include three communities in Rhode Island, one in Stoughton, Massachusetts and one in New Jersey.

These additions will mark Purple Flag’s expansion into Rhode Island and New Jersey, which would make them the 10th and 11th states to join the Purple Flag network. The growth reflects increasing national demand for standardized, evidence-based dementia care and highlights the role of strong provider partnerships in driving that expansion.

“As Purple Flag continues to grow, partnerships with organizations like SLR are critical,” Carter added. “Their willingness to invest in both maintaining and expanding high standards of care ensures that more residents and families across more states have access to trusted, high-quality dementia care.”

“We’ve always believed there is a right way to care for seniors with memory loss — by providing a safe, therapeutic environment and evidence-based programs that actually treat the symptoms of cognitive impairment,” shared Tadd Clelland, SLR’s President & CEO. “Every family navigating a dementia diagnosis deserves to walk through our doors feeling certain, not just hopeful, that their loved one is in the best possible hands. Purple Flag provides a powerful, concrete symbol to residents, families and our professional referral partners of the work we’ve been doing for years.”

Purple Flag accreditation is awarded to providers that demonstrate alignment with the organization’s 10 Best Practice Program Standards, which are designed to improve quality of life, safety and outcomes for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. These standards emphasize staff training, resident engagement, environmental design and family support.

With more than seven million Americans age 65 and older currently living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias — a number expected to grow significantly in the coming decades — the need for consistent, high-quality care has never been greater. Accreditation provides families with confidence that a provider has been rigorously evaluated and is equipped to deliver compassionate, effective support.

SLR’s continued investment in Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™ reinforces its position as a national leader in senior living and demonstrates how large-scale commitment can help drive meaningful change across the industry.
