Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™ Celebrates First Hospital Accreditation and Second Accreditation in Maryland

Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™ joined leaders, staff and community members on May 12 to celebrate the official flag-raising at Deer’s Head Hospital Center. The flag not only recognizes the organization’s accreditation as a Purple Flag provider, Deer’s Head is the first hospital in the nation to receive the distinction.

Deer’s head has the added distinction of being the second provider overall in Maryland, the second member of the LifeSpan Network and the 38th provider overall to receive the Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care accreditation. The honor further strengthens a growing partnership network focused on advancing dementia care across the region.

The flag-raising ceremony, held during National Skilled Nursing Care Week, served as a public recognition of Deer’s Head’s commitment to excellence in caring for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Several community leaders and dignitaries were in attendance, including Maryland Senator Mary Beth Carozza. The Purple Flag now flies as a visible symbol of that commitment to residents, families and the broader community.

“Deer’s Head Center represents the kind of leadership and dedication that drives meaningful change in dementia care,” said Christopher Carter, Founder & CEO of Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™ and President of the Connecticut Assisted Living Association. “As a hospital, their achievement highlights the importance of integrating best practices across a wide range of care settings. We are proud to recognize them as our 38th accredited organization and to continue building momentum in Maryland alongside LifeSpan Network.”

As a long-term care provider with a dedicated memory care unit, Deer’s Head Hospital Center demonstrated alignment with Purple Flag’s 10 Best Practice Program Standards, which are designed to improve quality of life, safety and outcomes for individuals living with dementia. These standards emphasize staff training, resident engagement, environmental design and family support.

Purple Flag’s collaboration with LifeSpan Network, Maryland’s leading senior care provider association, played a key role in supporting Deer’s Head through the accreditation process. The partnership continues to open doors for additional communities across the state to pursue accreditation and strengthen their dementia care offerings.

“This milestone reflects the dedication of our entire team,” said Dr. Mary Beth Waide, CEO of Deer’s Head Hospital Center. “The flag-raising ceremony was a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the work that happens every day to ensure our residents receive compassionate, high-quality care. We are honored to be recognized and to stand alongside other Purple Flag providers committed to excellence.”

For more than 60 years, Deer’s Head Hospital Center has served the community through a person-centered, multidisciplinary approach to care. Its vision remains focused on creating a collaborative, healing environment where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.

With dementia diagnoses continuing to rise — more than seven million Americans age 65 and older are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias — the need for trusted, high-quality care continues to grow. Purple Flag accreditation provides families with confidence that a provider has been rigorously evaluated and is equipped to deliver consistent, compassionate support.
