Cornerstone at Canton Celebrates Purple Flag for Dementia Care™ Accreditation with Flag-Raising Ceremony

Local senior living and memory support community Cornerstone at Canton held a flag-raising ceremony this week to celebrate achieving Purple Flag for Dementia Care™ accreditation. Cornerstone at Canton is now the fourth senior living community in the state to achieve Purple Flag accreditation, with several more Massachusetts communities undergoing evaluation. Since its establishment in 2020, the Purple Flag accreditation program has become widely adopted by the industry, particularly in the northeastern region of the United States. In 2023 alone, 26 different senior living communities across the northeast have achieved Purple Flag accreditation, bringing the grand total to 31.

Purple Flag for Dementia Care™ is a collaboration between the Institute for Senior Living Education (ISLE) and the Connecticut Assisted Living Association (CALA). The program’s standards evaluate an organization’s capacity to provide collaborative care in a safe, functional and respectful environment, ensuring high-quality care and overall quality of life for residents.

As part of the evaluation process, Cornerstone at Canton demonstrated adherence to 60 best practice standards and training outlined by Purple Flag for services provided to individuals with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Cornerstone at Canton is the sixth Senior Living Residences (SLR) community to achieve accreditation as part of the organization’s system-wide qualification initiative.

The flag-raising event provided an opportunity for the community’s leadership, staff, residents, family members and local eldercare professionals to come together and celebrate the achievement. The purple flag will now fly in front of the community as a symbol of excellence in dementia care. We were honored to help Cornerstone at Canton celebrate Purple Flag for Dementia Care.

“Thank you to Chris Carter and the team at Purple Flag for creating this framework and raising the bar for dementia care across the board,” shared Rebecca Scalzo, Cornerstone’s Executive Director. “It is so exciting to see this symbol take hold in Massachusetts. I truly hope more assisted living communities in our area are encouraged to participate in this process because it means that families have better choices for their loved ones.”

“We’d like to congratulate Cornerstone at Canton for all of their dedication and hard work,” said Christopher Carter, President of the Connecticut Assisted Living Association (CALA). “The team is clearly committed to providing high-quality care and moving senior living forward, and we commend them for their efforts.”
